Most people look at this and think “Affluent soccer mom.” Most Oppos look at this and think, “Poser soccer mom paying too much for her repair bills who should’ve bought an XJ Cherokee.” I look at this and think, “Yes, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , it would make a good DD for me, a person without spouse or children.”

That’s OK, if I ever win the lottery I’m buying one for my partner. I know it’s exactly what he wants in a car. Of course, then I’d be stuck driving it most of the time because he hates driving.

Same. I’ve found an extremely tempting older ML55 for $7k on craigslist.

It isn’t.

A good daily driver is small, reliable, and economical. None of those are characteristics which I look for in a car.

Have you driven one? Those older ML’s drive like shit IMO. The newer ones are pretty decent though.

disagree on the small and economical part.
My best daily would be a wagon or ute, and I’d put comfort over economy right now so I’m torn between a Stagea or a XR6 Turbo ute. I’ve got a couple of months to pick one.

X164s are usually fantastic buys. This one is a bit hit and miss because it’s an 08 with under 80k on it, so it may have balance shaft issues. Beyond 80k they’re usually good. If the engine serial number is bigger than 2739..30 088611 you’re in the clear, or if it’s been fixed you’re in the clear. I’d probably aim for one with 90k+ miles and recently replaced air suspension, but I’m rather risk-averse. They drive very smoothly, are incredibly comfortable, and have better visibility than most people expect given the rising window lines.

GLs are cars I’d be really very happy to own, but not willing to pay any amount of people currency dollars to do so.

Now a GLK, on the other hand? That I want badly.

Bullshit. A good daily driver would be basically a tank. Because having the comfort to give absolutely no fucks about people being stupid around you is an expense worth paying for.

Interestingly enough, 06-07 Mercedes MLs are fine because they use the older 5 litre V8 as opposed to the 4.7L or 5.5L V8s found in the GL. The MLs are also slightly more compact, cheaper, and are a bit quicker. I’d go for a 2007 Mercedes ML500 with as many options as you can afford in terms of a commuter Merc SUV. My best friend’s family has had 3 W164 MLs, and each has been rather reliable and comfortable, with the V8s being fast. They use them for hauling transport truck parts and whatnot while still being commuters, so they do put them to the test.

Idk man, ive driven loads of very capable off road stuff that have better road manners than old ML’s. Driven plenty of old ML55's and they also drove awfully(although they are reasonably quick). Zero steering feel, soft brakes and sluggish drivetrain. Awful interior design and materials. Mercedes at its worst(well, maybe tied with the C class from the same gen).

Interesting. I mean yeah, steering feel and brakes don’t exactly provide feedback, and the trans is lazy, but it all works well and they handle bumps well and are generally comfortable. A lot of people love these things. compared to any rover, jeep, or domestic truck I’ve driven from the same time period the ML is way better. Maybe not at everything all the time, but overall for sure. Interior is definitely on the cheap side, but facelifted ones are a huge improvement.

I don’t like this version of the GLK.

Its styling cues have been taken from larger boxy/macho SUVs but the design decision to make it shrink-to-fit-smaller-CUV-size gives it very odd and unappealing proportions IMHO
